Time and Elliott Carter

I want to direct you to the latest installment of my ClassicalTV column, because it’s about a great composer, who has a work premiering at Miller Theater this Saturday, with Louis Karchin conducting the League of Composers Orchestra in the Concertino for Bass Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra, as well as premieres from Missy Mazzoli, Arthur Krieger, David Rakowski and Shulamit Ran. I had the true honor and privilege of talking with Carter this past Monday, and it was great fun. Carter’s art sounds esoteric as hell, but it’s also full of the feeling of being completely grounded in life, and that’s because he is totally engaged with civilization and society — he cares. A Titan, just at the edge of our ability to perceive his greatness.
