Summer Caverns

Hearing my first sounds of this year’s BOAC Marathon: Quartet New Generation, four recorders and electronics. Unexpectedly powerful and amazing resonant sound in the Winter Garden. A welcome aesthetic on this hot humid day.

They are now going to play a piece by Paul Moravic that I am very interested in hearing. Twenty different recorders used, moving from bass to soprano registers. It has a contemporary lyricism and contrapuntal structure. Cannot get enough of the sound of these instruments in this glass and marble cathedral size space. QNQ is making a big impression.

I'm a composer and musician, and I write about music—I do that here, for the New York Classical Review, at the Brooklyn Rail (I edit the music section there) and any place else that will have me, like New Music Box and Music & Literature. I also wrote the Miles Davis' Bitches Brew book in the 33 1/3 series.
