Video of the Week

My life on each coast has taken me to see over a dozen concerts led by Valery Gergiev, this fall has added to that number. I’m always left with a deep, lingering space in my memory of him leading the music while the Kirov danced Scheherezade in Berkeley, about ten years ago now. There was a profound silence among all the patrons as we walked away from the hall, interrupted by this truth from an older gentleman: “that was the greatest thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”

I'm a composer and musician, and I write about music—I do that here, for the New York Classical Review, at the Brooklyn Rail (I edit the music section there) and any place else that will have me, like New Music Box and Music & Literature. I also wrote the Miles Davis' Bitches Brew book in the 33 1/3 series.
