Lester Leaps In, Modern Style

This is a fun video from 1992 of saxophonists Chico Freeman, Arthur Blythe, Sam Rivers and Nathan Davis, digging into a skewed version of Lester Young’s “Lester Leaps In” with the rhythm section of Don Pullen, Santi Debriano and Idris Muhammad. All of these great musicians were as comfortable playing inside as they were playing outside.

I’m a sucker for Arthur Blythe

I'm a composer and musician, and I write about music—I do that here, for the New York Classical Review, at the Brooklyn Rail (I edit the music section there) and any place else that will have me, like New Music Box and Music & Literature. I also wrote the Miles Davis' Bitches Brew book in the 33 1/3 series.
