Today’s 12 Most Important Living Jazz Musicians?

Uh-oh. Richard Scheinin of the San Jose Mercury News is attempting to start World War Three with a “Jazz’s 12 Most Important Musicans” list that starts out safely with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins, and then zooms to present-day artists from Wynton Marsalis and Joe Lovano to Brian Blade and Jason Moran. By most important, I believe he means the most influential rather than the greatest. Nonetheless, there will be hell to pay.

I'm a composer and musician, and I write about music—I do that here, for the New York Classical Review, at the Brooklyn Rail (I edit the music section there) and any place else that will have me, like New Music Box and Music & Literature. I also wrote the Miles Davis' Bitches Brew book in the 33 1/3 series.
