Good Gifts To Give (And Get)

A great gift for that certain art/prog-rock loving someone in your life, even if that’s just you (go ahead and ask for it):

Cuneiform, one of the best and most distinctive labels out there, has put out their first box set:

Art Zoyd’s 44 1/2: Live + Unreleased Works

If this band is new to you, there were/are one of the great, seminal art rock bands, one of the few that actually made abstraction and rock work. Out as of November 24, this is a 12 CD/2 DVD collection and goes some distance toward answering the impossible question, what is Art Zoyd. Think of freely improvised rock, post-rock with abstraction, prog heavy metal, avant-garde classical music with rock instrumtents, all that and much more.

If something more modest will do, I highly recommend Rights from Schnellertollermeier, industrial strength, machine-tooled, totally heavy and grooving instrumental prog-rock, one of my favorite albums of the year.

All Cuneiform releases are available at Amazon, of course, and also Bandcamp

I'm a composer and musician, and I write about music—I do that here, for the New York Classical Review, at the Brooklyn Rail (I edit the music section there) and any place else that will have me, like New Music Box and Music & Literature. I also wrote the Miles Davis' Bitches Brew book in the 33 1/3 series.
