John Coltrane

Previously unreleased, out September 27

Today, September 23, is John Coltrane’s birthday (born 1926), so happy birthday to all of us for his presence and his legacy.

A good way to appreciate him is to tune into WCKR FM 89.9 in and around New York City or via their web page (which also might be best in NYC as well because they’ve been having intermittent transmission problems the past few weeks).

And order his new CD—that’s right, another album is coming out of the Impulse vaults: Blue World, never before released. The previous such find, last year’s Both Directions at Once, was solid but offered no revelations, not a bad thing. I’ve got no promo on the new one, so can’t offer any take, but we can all check out this single track as a sample.

I'm a composer and musician, and I write about music—I do that here, for the New York Classical Review, at the Brooklyn Rail (I edit the music section there) and any place else that will have me, like New Music Box and Music & Literature. I also wrote the Miles Davis' Bitches Brew book in the 33 1/3 series.
