A Beginner’s Guide to Science Fiction | The New York Public Library

So January 2 was National Science Fiction Day. I didn’t know, but then there’s a day for everything now. Science Fiction is my original and favorite literary genre (when other kids were reading Hardy Boys, I was reading Jules Verne and Tom Swift), and I’m glad to draw your attention to this beginner’s guide that the New York Public Library put together.

Science Fiction is more than books, so the list helpfully includes video as well. It’s a list, and it’s big, so I and everyone else will havve quibbles. It may not seem that Jurassic Park and The Fifth Element would be genre recommendations, but then this is guide for someone who wants a door into a rich and complex genre. As they should, because if anything has dominated post-WWII culture, it is Sci-Fi.
