My name is George Grella, and I’ve been keeping this blog since February, 2008.
I’m a composer, freelance writer, and independent scholar. I began writing about music in the late 1980s, when I was living in New York City and playing at CBGB and The Knitting Factory.
Currently, I am the freelance music editor at the Brooklyn Rail and a freelance critic at the New York Classical Review (both since fall 2013). Along with this blog, in the past decade I’ve contributed to the Grove Dictionary of American Music and Musicians, The Wire, Downbeat, Bandcamp, NewMusicBox, American Record Guide, Playbill, Sequenza21, the Centre Canadien D’Architecture, Signal to Noise, Time Out New York, ClassicalTV, and others.
I am the author of Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, the only jazz title in Bloomsbury’s 33 1/3 series.
I am available to write liner notes, one sheets, press releases, and the like. Contact me at “gtra1n” at “thebigcityblog” dot com.
